Commemorating the 10^th Anniversary of the July 9^th Student Uprising in Iran in Toronto

On July 9^th, in unison with the people of Iran , more then two thousand Iranians in the Toronto area formed a long human chain on Yonge Street . The chain stretched from Willowdale’s Mel Lastman Square northward , approaching Finch Ave.  The event was organized by the Committee for Solidarity with Iran . Similar to Willowdale, hundreds of Iranians gathered along Yonge Street in Richmond Hill, carring placards and lighting candles.

The placards carried by protestors aimed to raise the awareness of non-Iranians about the situation in Iran . They condemned the Iranian government’s suppression, brutalization,  and jailing of peaceful protesters in Iran , who have repeatedly taken to the streets in large numbers since the controversial presidential election of June 12^th.

After sunset, hundreds of the demonstrators lit candles and remembered the dozens of victims of the recent violence in Iran . The organizers had also prepared a one-meter wide and ten-meter-long green cloth, which was signed by hundreds of protestors with the words, “Ahmadinejad’s is not my president.”  More signatures will be gathered to voice people’s protests over the coming days. The numerous signed cloths will be sown together to create one of the world’s the longest protest symbols.

The protestors chanted slogans that demanded freedom and security for their compatriots in Iran . The slogans inscribed on the placards were as follows:

* Election  not Selection

* Condemn  ”CONfessions” under Torture

* Support the Movement for Democracy in Iran

تظاهرات ایرانیان تورنتو برای یادمان دهمین سالگرد 18 تیر

همراه و همگام با مردم ایران، بیش از 2 هزار تن از ایرانیان تورنتو برای برگزاری یادبود 18 تیر، روز پنجشنبه 9 جولای(18 تیرماه 1388) از ساعت 8 تا 10 شب در خیابان یانگ در منطقه شمال شهر تورنتو اقدام به تشکیل یک زنجیره انسانی نمودند.

ایرانیان در این مراسم ضمن در دست داشتن پلاکاردهایی که به زبان انگلیسی  شعارهایی در حمایت از جنبش مردم ایران و محکوم کردن فشارها و سرکوب های وارد شده به مردم روی آنها نوشته شده بود توجه غیرایرانیان را به رویدادهای اخیر ایران جلب می کردند. اغلب تشکیل دهندگان زنجیره انسانی پس از تاریک شدن هوا با روشن کردن شمع و در دست گرفتن آن یاد قربانیان رویدادهای اخیر راهم گرامی داشتند. در همین مراسم و برای همراهی با حرکت تهیه طولانی ترین طومار جهان علیه انتخاب غیردموکراتیک محمود احمدی نژاد به مقام ریاست جمهوری ایران، صدها زن و مرد و پیر و جوان با ماژیک جمله “احمدی نژاد رئیس جمهور ما نیست” را به زبان فارسی و انگلیسی بر روی پارچه ای به عرض 90 سانتیمتر و طول ده ها متر می نوشتند. قرار است جمع آوری امضاءهای اعتراضی روزهای آینده و در جریان برگزاری گردهمایی های ایرانیان ادامه داشته باشد. پارچه های امضاء شده در نقاط مختلف بعدا به هم دوخته خواهند شد تا بزرگترین طومار اعتراضی جهان آماده شود. درمراسم یادمان دهمین سالگرد 18 تیر صدها تن از ایرانیان با گرایش های سیاسی گوناگون نیز در قسمت های مختلف میدان مل ملستمن در منطقه ایرانی نشین شمال تورنتو به تظاهرات و سردادن شعارهای اعتراضی و پخش سرودهای آزادیخواهانه مشغول بودند. برخی از شعارهای ایرانیان که روی پلاکاردهای بزرگ نوشته شده و در دست افراد تشکیل دهنده زنجیره انسانی ایرانیان تورنتو قرار داشت به شرح زیر بود:
